At Freedom to Learn, we've always believed in the transformative power of education. But today, the cost of living crisis presents an unprecedented challenge that threatens to hinder our mission. This is a worrying time for us, as it is for many small charities.

We will work as hard as we can, for as long as we can, to ensure children in rural Nepal have access to an quality education, because we know that education, not aid, is key to ending the poverty cycle. Now more than ever, your support is crucial.

Support Beepul's future mountain biking career! 💚💪🚲

Beepul is one of our former students, who developed a love of riding after benefitting from our Ride for Life project. He is a talented rider and now competes at elite levels.

After an accident in 2022, Beepul now has to compete with a broken bike, which is becoming increasingly impossible.

He says, "The hardest thing is, when I go to races, the rest of the riding community sees me as a village farming boy, with lack of training and a broken bike and they look down on me. It can be very demotivating. When practicing in 2022 I crashed and broke the front triangle of my bike, which had cost my family all of our money. Ever since then it has been almost impossible to ride."

He continues, "I have worked very hard to improve my skills. Twice I have managed to come first on my broken bike and once, when I had no chain, I came sixth. That was really hard."

Beepul will be able to ride, train, defeat prejudice and create more equality in Nepalese sport, while inspiring kids from vulnerable backgrounds.

In 2023, we facilitated two days of specialised maths training with 27 teachers, attending from 27 schools. The trainer, Lorna Walton, was a visiting maths teacher from the UK. The training focused on primary maths strategies proven to make an accelerated impact in students' age-related attainment.

As a result, the following changes have happened:

💚 For Students: Increased engagement, with students reporting that maths lessons are more “fun” and “interesting”. They enjoyed all the new resources. 🙂

💚 For Teachers: Regular creation of new maths resources, compared to almost
none previously. We have observed teachers frequently tailoring maths activities to children, personalising the learning process, with improved academic results. 🇳🇵

Did you know that, when it comes to climate change, Nepal is one of the worst affected countries in the world, despite being one of the lowest carbon emitters? In Nepal, the impact of climate change is acute, adversely affecting lives with floods, forest fires, damaged crops and subsequent high levels of migration. 🌏

This year, we plan to deliver an exciting new project based on environmental education called A Pedagogy of Empowerment, Hope and Action (PEHA). As well as facing significant barriers to education, our beneficiaries are also hugely impacted by climate change.

We will instil an understanding of climate change in our beneficiaries and explore the tangible ways the young people themselves can change the future for the better. PEHA will build on our long-standing and successful Act on Education project, where children will work with our facilitators to identify the problems caused by climate change, discuss possible solutions and present these findings to large audiences in a number of theatrical performances. Many stakeholders, including school management, local businesses, politicians and journalists will attend these events and everyone will work together to action the solutions identified by the young people.
